Caroline

Wow that track by Pralay was awesome. I am no sitar lover, but somehow adding the sitar to something with their U2-like sound really made me happy. I wonder if their whole album is as great as that track.

Caroline, I have to say that I found the other tracks I listened to a lot harder than that one ("You" seems to be their power ballad), but I got my husband to listen, and he says he finds them closer to U2, at least on a couple of tracks, but that you can definitely hear the Guns 'n' Roses influence, too. GNR isn't my cuppa tea, so I suspect that's why I find the other tracks a bit too edgy for my taste.

I do know that Pralay has a MySpace page, where music and videos are supposed to be available, but because I'm on dial-up I can't get anything on MySpace to load, so I don't know what's there, but it might be worth checking it out if you want to know more about what they sound like beyond the one track.

The Other

I was at the library this evening, while Herself was at the K-W Knitters' Guild meeting, and using the free WiFi access there I was able to view Pralay's MySpace page, which is linked off the band's website (www.pralay.org); the MySpace page has links to sites hosting some of their music-video clips.

The band's music covers a very wide range of styles and has been influenced by a variety of bands: you can definitely hear the U2 influence on at least a couple of power-ballady songs in addition to "You".

However, there are others that are Guns n' Roses influenced, much harder and darker lyrically.

And at least one song I listened to ventures musically into electronic/industrial territory -- maybe a hint of Nine Inch Nails...

Now, these are all from their album "14" -- named, if I remember correctly, for the length of time they've been performing together and representing works from across the whole period (I think, but don't hold me to it...) so it's perhaps understandable that their style may have changed over time.

As a result, not all of the songs on "14" may be to your taste (whether that be U2 or GnR), but I think that on the whole it would probably be a good album.

I believe that individual tracks are also available for purchase (that may have been via a link on the MySpace page, I can't remember for sure) so that's another option if you really aren't keen on having a whole album unless all of the tracks are in a style you appreciate.

And since The Other is A Bit Of A Headbanger from way back, he doesn't mind the harder edged stuff that they do.

But "You" is certainly a sublime song, one the best I've heard in a long time and a new fave.

T.O.
